We are excited to announce that this year for Christmas, Santa (and the good Lord), are bringing Vietnam Veteran, Wilbur Ochiltree, Jr., a home repair and remodel.  He was willing to give his life in service in Vietnam and now suffers form COPD because of his exposure to Agent Orange.  He also has diabetes and heart disease.

Mr. Ochiltree lives alone in his modest 2 bedroom home in Greenville, SC where he has been without hot water for some time, so he takes sponge baths with water heated on the stove.  His roof leaks in the laundry room , bath and closet causing mold and wood rot issues.  He cannot get homeowner’s insurance until the roof is fixed, so that will be taken care of first thing.  Both baths are in bad shape, so they will be demolished to make one large bath with a walk-in shower.  Currently, his water heater is is under his house, which is dangerous.  We will place the new one outside in an approved enclosure.  Mr. Ochiltree’s home needs lots of work, so in the spirit of giving, please help us help this deserving veteran by making a donation.  Thank you!

PROJECT DETAILS

December 10, 2018

We had a great first week of repairing and remodeling Vietnam veteran, Mr. Ochiltree’s home.  The front and back roof sections were torn off and replaced just in time for the deluge and snow over the weekend.  The two baths were completely demolished.  We widened the doors, moved and replaced a window and installed a header and framing on a load bearing wall.  The associated electrical and plumbing changes are 80% complete.

That sets the stage to finish electrical and plumbing, replace the water beater, put down sub-floors, install the walk-in shower, hang and begin finishing sheet rock, install floor coverings and set the toilet.  We will paint, set doors and trim if we have time.

In just three days, we have seen a significant difference in Mr. O’s attitude and energy level.  When we told him we were going to tear out the carpet in the living room and hall, he started packing boxes to help remove some of the clutter.  He also said that his two daughters have offered to help clean his home once the bathroom is finished.  Restoring hope is a powerful gift.

We have had another great week of progress at Mr. O’s home.  The plumbing, water heater, electrical, sub-floor, floor covering, walk-in shower, drywall, toilet, and doors were all installed.  He is quite relieved, pun intended, to be able to have an inside toilet again, not to mention being able to take a hot shower.  No more sponge baths with water heated on the stove.  Speaking of stove, we replaced his old antiquated cook top with a much newer glass top.

This coming week, with the help of Upstate Warrior Solution volunteers, we will rip out the carpet in the hall and living room, then replace it with luxury vinyl tile.  On Wednesday and Thursday we will finish the bathroom and install the mini-split HVAC system.  With that he should be pretty much “wrapped” up for Christmas.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!!
