Volunteer FAQ

Who can volunteer?
Almost anyone! You do not need to be a professional contractor or have extensive construction experience to volunteer.
We welcome:
• Skilled tradespeople
• Contractors and construction professionals
• DIYers and weekend carpenters
• Individuals with little or no construction experience
• Church groups and faith-based organizations
• Businesses and community groups
• Students and other volunteers looking to serve
Our staff will provide leadership, instruction, and guidance throughout the project.

Do I need construction experience?
No. There are opportunities for volunteers of all skill levels.
Depending on your experience and comfort level, you may help with demolition, painting, caulking, insulation, LVP flooring installation, cutting, basic framing, trim carpentry, subfloor installation, or basic plumbing repairs.
You will never be asked to perform a task you are not comfortable doing. Projects and assignments are matched to your skills, experience, and comfort level.

What kind of work will I be doing?
Volunteer work varies from project to project. Some of the activities you may be asked to assist with include:
• Demolition
• Subfloor installation
• Basic framing
• Basic trim carpentry
• Painting
• Caulking
• Basic plumbing repairs
• Insulation
• LVP flooring installation
• Measuring and cutting
• General cleanup and jobsite assistance
There is always plenty to do, and every job helps us make a meaningful difference in a homeowner’s life.

What if I don’t know how to do something?
That’s okay!
Emmanuel’s Hammer staff will be on site throughout the project to provide leadership, instruction, and guidance. We will show you how to perform the tasks you are assigned and help you along the way.
You don’t have to know how to build a house to help build a better home.

What are the volunteer hours?
A typical volunteer workday is 9:00 AM–5:00 PM.
Our Project Manager generally arrives around 8:30 AM to prepare the jobsite, and the team will begin packing up around 4:30 PM.
If you cannot stay for the entire day, that’s perfectly fine. Please let our Project Manager know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

What should I wear?
Please wear clothing appropriate for construction work and the weather.
We recommend:
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or work boots
• Comfortable work clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty
• Clothing appropriate for hot or cold weather
• Work gloves, if you have them
Because much of our work takes place outdoors or in unfinished homes, temperatures can vary significantly. Please plan accordingly.

Is safety equipment provided?
Yes. Your safety is our top priority.
Emmanuel’s Hammer provides appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including items such as:
• Safety glasses
• Gloves
• Face masks
Use the PPE appropriate for the task you are performing. Our staff will provide safety guidance and help ensure you understand the proper procedures before beginning your work.

What about food and drinks?
We provide iced water and hydration mixes at the jobsite.
Volunteers are welcome to bring their own lunch or leave the jobsite to pick up lunch. Please keep in mind that our staff typically will not leave the jobsite to pick up lunch for volunteers.

What if I have special needs or limitations?
Please let our Project Manager know ahead of time about any scheduling needs, physical limitations, or other special considerations.
We want to make sure your volunteer experience is safe, meaningful, and enjoyable.

Can I volunteer if I can only come for part of the day?
Yes. We understand that everyone’s schedule is different.
If you cannot stay for the full 9:00 AM–5:00 PM workday, please communicate that with our Project Manager so we can plan your assignment accordingly.

Can my church or faith-based organization volunteer?
Absolutely.
We are always looking for like-minded churches and faith-based organizations to partner with us.
A partnership with Emmanuel’s Hammer can include much more than financial or volunteer support. We seek dynamic relationships where we can communicate regularly, pray for one another, and encourage and support each other in ministry.
Your church can:
• Volunteer on a specific home repair project
• Support a particular project financially
• Incorporate Emmanuel’s Hammer into your annual mission plans
• Encourage members to become individual volunteers
• Help spread awareness of the need for safe, decent housing
• Pray for the homeowners and families we serve
Together, we can minister to both the physical and spiritual needs of those in our community.

Can my business, community group, or organization volunteer?
Yes! We welcome groups and organizations that want to make a difference in their community.
Whether your team has construction experience or simply wants to work together in service, we can find meaningful ways for your group to participate.

What if I don’t want to do construction work?
There are many ways to support Emmanuel’s Hammer beyond the jobsite.
We also need volunteers with skills and interests in areas such as:
• IT and technology
• Accounting and administrative support
• Fundraising
• Marketing and communications
• Advocacy
• Outreach
• Photography and storytelling
• Community engagement
Your skills don’t have to involve a hammer to make a difference.

How can I become an Emmanuel’s Hammer advocate?
Advocates come in many forms, but they share one thing in common: they want to help their neighbors who need a better place to live.
You can become an advocate by using your gifts, talents, skills, and creativity to spread the word about Emmanuel’s Hammer.
You can:
• Follow and share our social media updates
• Share project stories with your friends and family
• Add a link to Emmanuel’s Hammer on your website or blog
• Talk about the importance of safe, decent housing
• Share the stories of homeowners we have helped
• Invite Emmanuel’s Hammer to speak at your church, workplace, or community organization
• Encourage others to volunteer or become advocates
• Help us raise awareness about the need for home repair in our community
Sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply tell someone else why this work matters.

Who will be leading the project?
An Emmanuel’s Hammer staff member will be on site throughout the project to provide leadership, instruction, and guidance.
