PROJECT DETAILS
This is Laura Dobbins and her daughter Christa. Laura was a single mom for 5 years before marrying Joey in 2015. Together they have a blended family of three teenagers. They currently live in an older single-wide mobile home in Taylors, SC that has been added onto over the years. The home has multiple problems including soft floors, lack of insulation, leaky roof, no central heat & air and vermin infestation. With power bills eating up most of the income and teenagers eating up the rest, she has had no money for repairs. Upon conducting our site visit and inspection, it was decided that the mobile home was not repairable. Therefore, we have decided to demolish it and build Laura and family a new home. Before her ex-husband left he had built a two-story structure that housed Laura’s beauty salon. We are maintaining half of that structure and incorporating it into the home. We would like to thank Bill Pelham with Pelham Architects, LLC for providing the plans.
After months of additional planning, we are ready to get started. By the end June, we hope to have the demolition complete and the foundation started. We will begin framing in July. We will need lots of volunteers help then and going forward. Stay tuned for additional emails requesting help.
On Tuesday, a small team from Buncombe Street UMC finished the prep work for demolition which included cutting the two story stick-built building in half in order to preserve Laura’s salon. Yesterday was truly demo day as Darrell Minton with General Tractor Work brought in the big guns and leveled what was Laura’s home. Now it’s time to rebuild with foundation work starting soon.
We will be scheduling volunteer teams by the end of July. If you would like to participate financially, please click the donate button. Your prayers are always welcome.
We are very excited to announce that not only is the foundation complete on Laura’s new home, but the framing is in full swing. In fact, it should be in the dry by the end of this week.
Laura and family recently walked through and wrote scripture passages on the framing in each room. The home is blessed already!!
The next step will be to install shingles, rough-in the electrical, plumbing and HVAC. We will need volunteer help with the electrical.

Laura’s home has been framed and in the dry thanks to Parker Carlisle with K C Concepts. They did an amazing job in a short period of time.
The shingles and rough-in of plumbing, electrical & HVAC are next. We have been blessed with good weather.
Laura, Christa and Joey are so thankful and continue to add scripture to the studs and headers.
We’ll be sending out requests for volunteers soon.

To say that Laura is “over the moon” would be an understatement. She commented the other day about how excited she is to have a home hat she doesn’t have to worry about snakes getting into, as they did in her old home. That put’s it into perspective, doesn’t it?
There has been a lot of activity at her home in the past few weeks. The shingles are on and the windows and front door have been installed, so the home is secure. The HVAC and plumbing rough-ins are complete. Thanks to a lot of volunteer help, the electrical should be completed by Tuesday.
In addition, we have hosted : Two Sprout classes; 4th & 5th graders from Buncombe Street UMC where they learned about local missions, saw the tangible effects, and heard from Laura and Christa as to how their lives are being changed by the body of Christ coming together to help. Also, Buncombe Street UMC Men’s Work Team and a separate Buncombe Street Staff Team for general grounds maintenance and job clean-up.
Please make some time during your busy Thanksgiving and Christmas schedule to help with this project. You will be glad that you did. Your help will be greatly appreciated.
If you are not able to make it, but would like to contribute financially to this awesome project, please click the “Make a Donation” button. Thank you!
Significant progress has been made on Laura’s house in the past two weeks. The siding is complete and the walls have been insulated, thanks to Brett Hovis at A1 Insulation Co.
We have constructed a 8′ x 24′ deck across the front of the home adjoining the existing salon porch.
Last, but certainly not least, we have passed the rough-in inspection, which allows us to hang and finish the drywall this coming week.
With the heavy lifting complete, we will be able to schedule volunteer teams to finish out the interior beginning in January.
Please consider an end-of-the-year financial contribution to help us get Laura and family into their new home by March 2018.
We have come a long way since the last update at Christmas. We now have permanent power and the HVAC installation has been completed. This has allowed the sheetrock to be installed, finished, primed, and painted. The doors and trim have been installed in the bedrooms. Thanks to Chris Keel with Upstate Commercial Flooring, the floor coverings will be installed tomorrow and Friday.
Last week was amazing! The 1500 gallon septic tank and extensive drain fields were installed. The kitchen cabinets and vanities were assembled and installed. Carpet and vinyl were completed and lights and fans assembled and hung. Plumbing and electrical are 90% complete.
The Finishing Blitz is complete! The long awaited day of final inspection is here. All that is left is for Greenville County to issue The Certificate of Occupancy, then Laura and family will be able to start moving in.
Laura said it best in her quote from Christmas… ” I am overwhelmed with God’s love this Holiday season. It is packed with the excitement of looking forward to our brand new home that God has provided through Emmanuel’s Hammer. Ephesians 3:20 has become my theme: ‘Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than I could ask or imagine according to His power that is at work in us.’ Everyone involved in this project has truly allowed God to work through them and bless us more than we can ask or imagine. I will never forget 2017 and I look forward to Christmas 2018 in our new home. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!”

It is with great joy and excitement that I inform you that Laura and family spent their first night in their new home this past Thursday.
Several of us helped her unload the 16′ POD. Now she has the task of unpacking all of those boxes. No one ever said moving was fun!!
We will schedule the home dedication as soon as everything is in place. Praise be to God!!
“I’m so thankful and overwhelmed by God’s goodness and love. I truly love all of you.”
